2019 #Bilbao | One of the most beautiful cities in the world
Updated: Jan 8, 2020
First of all, Bilbao is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen yet in this world. This city is cosmos, it's love from the first sight, it's a magical super powerful magnet. #Bilbao just takes you in its arms and never let you go away anymore, you'll fall in love with it immediately and will always want to get back. If you would ask me "Is it worth visiting?" I would say "It's a must".
Continuing with a bit of stats. Bilbao is located in northern #Spain, the largest city in the province of Bizkaia and in the Basque Country, it's also the largest city proper in northern Spain. The population is around 1 mln people, including surroundings. After its foundation in the early 14th century Bilbao was a commercial hub of the Basque Country that enjoyed significant importance in Green Spain. This was due to its port activity based on the export of iron extracted from the Biscayan quarries. Throughout the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Bilbao experienced heavy industrialisation, making it the center of the second-most industrialised region of Spain, behind Barcelona. Nowadays, Bilbao is a vigorous city that is experiencing an ongoing social, economic, and aesthetic revitalisation process, started by the iconic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum and continued by other infrastructure investments.
Bilbao is considered the Nobel Prize for urbanism, it was handed out in June 2010. In January 2013 its mayor Inaki Azkuna received the 2012 World Mayor Prize awarded every two years by the British foundation The City Mayors Foundation, in recognition of the urban transformation experienced by the Biscayan capital since the 1990s. In November 2017 Bilbao was chosen the Best European City 2018 at The Urbanism Awards 2018, awarded by the international organisation The Academy of Urbanism.
Walking through this stunning city, when spring is in the air and perfect Saturday vibes around, makes you enjoy at its full. Starting from the river side and getting more inside, you'll see a lot of architectural varieties, which makes this city incredible. Welcome to Bilbao!
There are a lot of banks in Bilbao (kutxa = bank in #Euskadi language).
Old style fancy villas look gorgeous.
Modern buildings are constructed as surroundings to the churches.
The bridges make you feel like in the Star Wars movie.
Stylish street arts.
Nobody is in hurry here, enjoy life and have fun of a good weather because clear sunny days is a gift in Basque Country, where rain is a more normal condition.
A lot of old style beautiful buildings look so classy.
But just take a look at the other side of the river and you're like on the other planet.
Then look back at this side and find yourself in such an amazing urban style promenade.
Zubizuri (zubi = bridge in Euskadi) and it's one of the most beautiful bridges ever.
The floor is originally made of glass, which looks amazing, but practically as it's often rainy and windy in Basque Country (truly true) and Zubizuri has a curved inclined shape, therefore they covered it with anti-slippery texture - to do not let people fall down on the glass while it's a bad weather outside.
Saturday in such perfect weather is a good time for locals to enjoy walking and running along the river, for city guests just for having fun and falling in love with this incredible city.
Heading up more inside the modern part of the city you'll see how much #architecture is different and it makes it so attractive.
Church of San Jose.
San Jose square.
As everywhere in Basque Country, you will find all inscriptions in two languages: Euskadi (Basque language) and Spanish, both are official. By the way, in French part of Basque country it's even three languages around: Euskadi, Spanish and French.
Yes, Spain is a kind of "another country" here, having their own Government on Plaza Moyua. Better never call Basque Country "Spain", at least when you're here, Basque people are proud they live separate from Spain in their own country, having their own culture and language.
Plaza Moyua is a nice place to chill in the city center.
In spring it's especially beautiful with a lot of flowers and trees.
Old style churches are mixed up on the streets with new modern buildings and shopping molls as the neighbourhood.
Check out also Casco Viejo the old part of this awesome city.
